Is this class for web startups only?
No. Anyone with any idea and preferably a product can form or join a team.
What if I do want to test a web idea?
Great. Only condition is that you have to get the site up and deliver the minimum product feature set during the quarter.
Will I have built my start-up company by the end of the
semester?
Most likely not. You should know this coming in. Your initial start-up idea will change substantially during the semester; and it is very likely it will not work at all. Not because of you, it is just the nature of start-ups. Even the coolest ideas fail when they encounter real life. The biggest problem, and hence where we place most of the emphasis: not enough people will pay for the product or service. You will get frustrated when this happens. But then remember that the core function of the class is to teach you a method for starting-up a company. You will learn that even if you company does not take off. In fact, most of the learning comes from failures. It is this methodology and business aspects that will help you with entrepreneurial activities in your career. That is the core focus of the class.
If I will not end up with a start-up company, what does the class teach?
EAS 590 focuses on developing a thesis for a start-up company, then finding what works, and refining or “pivoting” (a
complete change) as we move along the semester. The focus is on learning the process.
Do I need to know programming?
No, this is a non-technical class. Yet, teams will develop a minimal product, which involves strong technical knowledge. Thus, it is important that each team include software coding experience.
The class open to undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Why not for the freshman class?
It is too early to get involved in entrepreneurial activity without having some academic experience.
Do I need a team to get into the class?
If you do not come in with a team, you will be able to form a team in class. By the third week all teams will have been formed. Networking events are held in advance to help put together teams.
How should team be formed?
The best way to take the class is to come in with an already formed team; and one that includes expertise in technical, design, and business areas. Ideally there are four members to a team. Our networking events will help you find team members.
